• STATE COLLEGE, Pennsylvania (Reuters) ? Legendary former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, fired in November after 46 years as head coach in the wake of a child sex abuse scandal involving an assistant, died on Sunday, his family said in a statement.

Paterno, 85, whose legacy as the winningest coach in major college football history was indelibly tarnished by his inaction in the abuse scandal, had been suffering from lung cancer.

“He died as he lived,” his family said. “He fought hard until the end, stayed positive, thought only of others and constantly reminded everyone of how blessed his life had been.”

Paterno was surrounded by his family when he died at Mount Nittany Medical Center, in the shadow of his former team’s Beaver Stadium. He disclosed he had treatable lung cancer shortly after university trustees ousted him for failing to tell police about a sex abuse allegation years earlier against longtime assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.

The sex abuse case at a highly respected football program like Penn State brought national attention to the issue of child sexual abuse in the same way that pedophilia charges involving Roman Catholic priests did years earlier.

Before the Sandusky scandal Paterno was a beloved institution in Pennsylvania known as JoePa as he made the Nittany Lions one of the most consistent winners in college football. His tenure was a rarity in collegiate sports and his legions of supporters shouted down critics who thought he was too old to be coaching as he entered his 80s.

In a Washington Post interview this month Paterno said he was unsure about how to handle the matter when one of his assistants came to him in 2002 after allegedly seeing Sandusky in the shower with a boy. “So I backed away and turned it over to some other people, people I thought would have a little more expertise than I did,” he said. “It didn’t work out that way.”

While his inaction led school officials to fire him, it did not change how many fans felt about Paterno.

    SHRINE OUTSIDE FOOTBALL STADIUM

Within minutes of news of his death on social media sites, dozens of sobbing students, alumni and fans streamed into the bitter cold to a makeshift shrine of votive candles and flowers at the foot of a statue of Paterno outside Beaver Stadium.

“He was more than half the reason I came here because of who he is,” said Katie Chwastyk, 21, a senior with tears streaming down her face and wearing a Penn State football sweatshirt.

Wearing a Penn State knit cap, freshman Cara Kirman, 19, of Harrisburg called Paterno “a father figure” and said, “In my mind, he is always going to be alive… It’s a very sad day.”

Paterno died hours after premature reports of his death were carried on Saturday by CBS Sports, which later apologized to his family and the Penn State community.

The university in a statement grieved the death of “a great man who made us a greater university. His dedication to ensuring his players were successful both on the field and in life is legendary and his commitment to education is unmatched in college football.”

Penn Staters for Responsible Stewardship, a group of alumni who objected to Paterno’s firing, said he inspired his “millions of fans … to be better human beings. When we lead our lives with generosity, commitment and humility, we carry on the legacy of Joseph V. Paterno, one of the truly great leaders of our time.”

Paterno had been in and out of the hospital since the cancer disclosure for treatment with radiation and chemotherapy, and also after he fell at home in December and broke his pelvis.

His family said on Saturday that his health had deteriorated in recent days and asked that the family’s privacy be respected “during this difficult time.”

    409 WINS IN 46 SEASONS

“His ambitions were far reaching but he never believed he had to leave this Happy Valley to achieve them,” the family said in a statement Sunday. “He was a man devoted to his family, his university, his players and his community.”

A member of the College Football Hall of Fame, Paterno was head coach of the Nittany Lions for 46 years. With 409 victories at Penn State, he won more games in big-time college football than any other coach in the sport’s history.

His downfall came with the disclosure of the charges against Sandusky, triggering one of the biggest scandals in college sports history. Paterno said he would retire at the end of the season but the university’s trustees fired him with four games remaining.

The move set off demonstrations by students who felt Paterno was treated unfairly and anger among some alumni. The two top officers of the university trustees stepped down this week.

Sandusky, who has maintained his innocence, faces 52 counts of sexual abuse of boys over a period of 15 years, including some incidents at the football complex on campus.

A Penn State graduate assistant testified to a grand jury that he told Paterno in 2002 that he witnessed Sandusky assaulting a boy in the showers at the football building. Paterno said he passed the information on to his boss, then Athletic Director Tim Curley. But no one told police, and the abuse continued for years, according to prosecutors.

University President Graham Spanier was fired along with Paterno, and Curley and a former finance official in the athletic department face charges of lying to a grand jury about the alleged abuse.

Sandusky is under house arrest awaiting trial on the abuse charges. He has pleaded not guilty.

Young Breast Cancer Survivors Face Psychological Distress A new study discovers that cancer treatments can significantly hinder the quality of life of younger breast cancer survivors.

Researchers discovered younger women with breast cancer experience a decrease in their health-related quality of life. They also may experience increased psychological distress, weight gain, a decline in their physical activity, infertility and early onset menopause.

The study is published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

Breast cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in women, and is the leading cause of death in women under 50 in the U.S.

Researchers note that although the survival rate for younger women with breast cancer has improved over the last two decades, their cancer treatments, despite their effectiveness, can seriously affect quality of life and other health outcomes.

In the study, researchers sought to determine the impact of cancer treatment on the quality of life of younger breast cancer survivors. Patricia A. Ganz, M.D., and colleagues reviewed studies that focused on overall quality of life, psychosocial effects, menopause and fertility-related concerns, and behavioral outcomes related to weight gain and physical activity.

The studies were published between January 1990 and July 2010. Of the 840 titles and abstracts reviewed, they focused on 28 with the most relevant data.

Investigators found that overall quality of life was compromised in younger breast cancer survivors, with the mental issues more severe than the physical problems.

Depression was also a problem as young women were also more depressed compared to the general age-matched population of women without cancer or women over 50 with breast cancer.

Premature menopause, infertility and menopause-related symptoms were more common and contributing factors to the level of distress in women 50 or younger after treatment.

Weight gain and physical inactivity were common health outcomes in younger women, although exercise rates generally increased after treatment.

Researchers believe the findings demonstrate the need for personalized treatment for breast cancer, especially among young women.

?By tailoring [treatment] and giving cytotoxic therapy only to those who may benefit, we can mitigate some of these side effects, but the long life expectancy for these younger women also provides a window of opportunity for cancer prevention and health promotion activities.?

  • David Beckham

    By GREG BEACHAM

    updated 9:03 p.m. ET Jan. 19, 2012

David Beckham considered offers from Paris, the Premiership and beyond. He decided nothing was better than his adopted home with the Los Angeles Galaxy.

The English superstar formally returned to his MLS club Thursday with a new two-year contract, vowing to win more trophies with the Galaxy while preparing to own an MLS franchise when his career ends. He’ll also be free to play at the Olympics if he’s chosen for Britain’s national squad.

After the excitement died down from the Galaxy’s run to the league title last fall during Beckham’s most impressive MLS season, the midfielder made his final decision to stay in Hollywood on New Year’s Eve over a glass of wine with his wife, Victoria.

“We’ve been happy here for the last five years, and we felt, why change something that works?” Beckham asked a packed room at Staples Center. “Los Angeles has been amazing to us as a family, so we’re going to continue to enjoy it. … We knew the first day that we arrived here that it would be a place that we’d spend many years, and I wasn’t wrong.”

The Beckhams’ four children are comfortable living in Southern California, and he felt his family’s well-being outweighed the intrigue of bigger offers from unnamed Premiership clubs or Paris Saint-Germain, which aggressively courted him in recent weeks.

“At 36 years old, to still have the offers that were being thrown at me, you have to look at all options,” Beckham said.

The bold experiment that began nearly five years ago has survived a rough start to become longer and more fruitful than nearly anybody expected when Beckham left Real Madrid and moved stateside, hoping to spread the world’s most popular sport in a nation that has always resisted its lure.

While Beckham’s move hasn’t transformed the sport in North America, he’s the biggest star and fan draw in MLS even after five seasons, and the Galaxy have been the league’s best team for two years.

“I must admit that I’ve never come back after a season with the Galaxy having been a champion,” Beckham said. “I wanted to have that feeling and enter back into that locker room a champion. And we are, but we’re not finished. I’m not just happy with one championship. I want more.”

His second contract with the Galaxy was greeted with nothing near the spectacle of his July 2007 arrival, when the club threw a huge party at Home Depot Center to herald the biggest contract in MLS history.

This time around, Beckham quietly met his usual media retinue at the downtown arena owned by AEG, the conglomerate that also owns the Galaxy. Beckham spends much of his free time in Los Angeles at Staples Center, where he watches Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers from a courtside seat ? sometimes even making it to games just a few hours after the Galaxy’s matches.

“I’ve become a Lakers fan, so being able to come to the games is great,” Beckham said. “There are so many things that we love.”

Staples Center’s owners are thrilled by the decision. AEG President Tim Leiweke said Beckham can play for the Galaxy for the rest of his career, if he chooses ? and when he’s done, AEG will help Beckham with his desire to own a franchise.

“For however long as he decides to play, the question of where he plays is not a question,” said Leiweke, whose company spent aggressively to assemble top talent around Beckham in the last two years. “Unless I’m mistaken, (ownership is) his future, once he decides to retire. We have structured that option in a way to allow David to become a partner in the league at some point in the near future and operate his own franchise.”

Even Beckham might not have predicted this outcome just two years into his tenure with the Galaxy, when the failed tenure of coach Ruud Gullit and the franchise’s general disarray prompted Beckham to twice go on loan to AC Milan, where he blew out his Achilles tendon in 2010.

Everything came together for Beckham in Los Angeles last year after he returned from injury and another training stint with Tottenham. He was among the league’s best players all season long with the Galaxy, who picked up Irish striker Robbie Keane as they topped the MLS table for the second straight season and steamrolled through the playoffs to the title.

Beckham’s assist set up Landon Donovan’s winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Houston in the MLS Cup on Nov. 20. Beckham celebrated the championship with his three sons on the Galaxy’s home field before saying he planned to debate his future over the holidays.

Beckham claimed he would consider staying with the Galaxy, yet many fans and observers in Europe didn’t believe him. Given his revitalized form with the Galaxy, many assumed he would take one of the offers sure to be dangled in front of him to resume his European career.

“I was always optimistic, because I felt he was really comfortable with the team and just happy,” said coach Bruce Arena, whose steady influence has been praised by Beckham. “We literally were working all the way through the year to get David back.”

  • Swarm-coverNobody wants to be told that their business model is obsolete. Ask Kodak. Or Hollywood. And the publishing industry is slower on its feet than most. Bookstores don’t want to believe that they’ll ultimately lose 75% of their pre-e-book business to that scourge plus Amazon delivery. (I’m assuming e-book market share will eventually plateau somewhere north of 50%.) Meanwhile, publishers cling to the model wherein readers purchase books individually, usually before they’ve been read: a model so entrenched that many seem to find it literally impossible to believe that alternatives might exist. I’ve been lamenting that paucity of imagination in my columns here for some time now. It’s why publishers have lashed out so ineptly at any suggestion of a subscription model. But I’ve also been saying for five years that publishing’s business model will ultimately become even less restrictive than that. In the end, lo these many decades from now, most books–and all novels–will be free to read, and their readers will decide whether and how much to pay for them after reading them. I know, big talk, no action, right? So:

  • Through the course of writing about mobile apps and their platforms, a lot of numbers get published that suggest who is beating whom in terms of market share between Apple?s iOS platform and Google?s Android operating system. The back and forth is important because things like market leadership and penetration are the macro view of the app story. The more people using iOS or Android, the more apps get made for them, and the more money invested in making those platforms better in order to keep business working. But the constant back-and-forth can get a little tedious.

Recent numbers released by research firm Nielsen, however, suggest that while Android is the dominant platform on the planet, Apple?s iOS always has a little juice left in the tank that could help it do something no one expects. By all accounts, Android should only grow larger as it spreads out across the world, fine-tunes its operating system and experience and gathers more partners in carriers and device makers. But then, every so often, Apple kicks on the afterburners and reminds everyone that it?s too early to call the race.

The most recent afterburner?s name is Siri.

    Driven by the new iPhone

As PC World reports, Nielsen?s latest survey focused on new smartphone owners in the fourth quarter of 2011 in the U.S. Among people who bought new smartphones in December, 44.5 percent opted for an iPhone ? double the number who did so in October. Meanwhile, only 46.9 percent of those who bought new phones went with Android devices, down significantly from the 61.6 percent who bought Android phones in October. The difference between those two periods: the iPhone 4S.

While Android still accounts for the biggest share of the U.S. smartphone market, appearing on 46 percent of all devices in use in the U.S., many consumers in December opted for Apple?s platform instead. Among those buying iPhones, the big majority ? 57 percent ? went with the iPhone 4S. Previously, we heard that customers were even breaking contracts to get the latest iPhone, and Nielsen reported that Apple?s market share rose to 43 percent in October and November, from 26 percent in Q3 2011. Meanwhile, Android?s share dropped from 60 percent to 46 percent in the same period.

It?s probably oversimplifying to find one cause in the shifts of the market for both companies, but the iPhone 4S was undoubtedly at least one big reason for the change. And the real reason for the sales of the iPhone 4S, given how similar it is to the iPhone 4, is Siri, the voice-activated personal assistant software that comes with the new iPhone and only with the new iPhone.

One app to rule them all

The big swing in Nielsen?s numbers after the release of the iPhone 4S, plus the rampant demand and the trend of customers being willing to pay extra to drop their contracts and upgrade early, suggest some very important things about Siri. The software has captured the attention and imagination of a lot of smartphone buyers. Voice-activated technology is by no means new, but Siri is an impressive gadget that looks new. It?s exciting in that ?magic? way Steve Jobs was so fond of talking about in terms of Apple devices. Even with controversy and bugs, even though Siri is still a beta product being actively worked on by Apple, it still brought lots of buyers to Apple?s doorstep.

That suggests that while Android and iPhone are pretty evenly matched on most fronts, Apple could be just one (or maybe two) really killer apps away from turning the tables. Imagine if Siri was a full-fledged, working product, up to par with what Apple claims it?ll be able to do: it would have blown the doors off, if the reception of the beta version of Siri is any indication.

Where Apple succeeds and Android falters is that Apple is, more often than not, taking the forward steps in the mobile race, while Android is keeping pace. In the U.S., Apple has narrowed the gap with one device brand against Android?s army. Siri is a pretty solid candidate as to why.

That suggests that the iPhone 5 could be a game changer in this on-going discussion, should Apple have the wherewithal to see the success of Siri and bring another game-changing app to the announcement. If it?s a great app, one might be all Apple needs.

    Perfect 10!

Heidi Klum, Lady Gaga and Rihanna make the most of their manicures with CND’s Shellac, a polish-gel hybrid in 28 colors that lasts up to two weeks. (Approx. $35, prices vary by salon; in salons only)

PHOTOS: The hottest nail looks from the Golden Globes

The best part? Gaga’s pro Deborah Lippmann raves, “No more chipping! But If you like to change your polish a lot, like every 45 seconds, [Shellac] is not for you,” she adds.

Lippmann, who also does the nails of Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey and Kate Winslet, goes on to explain why Shellac stands out above the rest in the gel mani industry.

PHOTOS: Hot celen nail polish looks we’re loving now

“The dry time is super fast.?You spend a couple minutes per layer under the UV lamp, but then it’s 100 percent dry so I don’t have to worry that [my clients are] going to put on a boot and smudge the polish. I use it on photo shoots, film junkets, the red carpet — anywhere when the polish has to be perfect and stay on. Shellac should last a week to two weeks depending on how hard you are on your nails.”

    QUIZ: What’s your polish personality?

But despite the easy and effortless application, plus worry-free wear and tear, Lippmann warns that once your Shellac manicure is ready to come off, you need to take proper care.

“You don’t want to peel it if the product starts to lift or loosen at the cuticle. It’s super fun to peel, but don’t do it! It’s 100 percent damaging to the nail,” she says. “Be careful when you’re having it removed — they take a stick and push back the product after they’ve soaked your nails. Make sure they’re gentle with the stick — don’t be after to tell them they’re scraping too hard.

An Interior Ministry statement issued Wednesday morning said the operations over the preceding 24 hours in eight different provinces also discovered caches of weapons, ammunition and explosives.

Meanwhile, the country’s Defense Ministry says a soldier was killed and four were wounded in clashes with insurgents on Tuesday.

Fighting in much of the country appears to have decreased in recent weeks, after heavy snows blanketed much of the mountainous terrain in which the Taliban usually operate.

  • NEW YORK ? Record spending by customers during the holiday season helped lift American Express Co.’s fourth-quarter profit by 12 percent.

U.S.-based spending rose 11 percent over the 2010 quarter to $145.5 billion, an average of $4,091 per cardholder during the final three months of 2011, the company said Thursday. Outside the U.S., spending rose 10 percent to $73.5 billion, or an average of $3,537 per cardholder.

The high spending levels were accompanied by the lowest default rate in the credit card industry, 2.3 percent of balances on an annualized basis. That dropped from 4.3 percent in the 2010 fourth quarter. The rate of customers who are 30 days or more behind on payments fell to 1.5 percent of balances, from 2.1 percent the prior year.

The figures reflect the fact that New York-based American Express serves a more affluent customer than its peers. It’s also quick to cancel cards if customers have problems making payments.

Even with high unemployment and continued doubts about the strength of the economy, credit card use has been on the rise. Discover Financial Services last month reported an 8 percent uptick in sales volume. MasterCard Inc. and Visa Inc. are also expected to show strong increases in card use ? and related profit growth ? when they report in the coming weeks.

The Federal Reserve that showed consumers have increased their borrowing in 13 of the past 14 months. Amex said revolving balances rose 3 percent in the quarter, a much slower rate than overall spending. That’s a sign customers are trying to pay their balances each month.

Increased use and improving payment habits have also been seen in the results of the major card issuing banks. While Citigroup Inc. reporting a disappointing fourth quarter, for example, it said its credit card portfolio is improving. Likewise, JPMorgan Chase & Co. posted a profit decline, but reported strengthening numbers for its credit card business.

Amex said it earned $1.19 billion, or $1.01 per share, in the last three months of 2011. That compared with $1.06 billion, or 88 cents per share, in the 2010 fourth quarter.

The per-share figures reflect a 3 percent decrease in the number of outstanding shares, due to buybacks, which has the effect of increasing per-share results.

Revenue jumped 7 percent to $7.74 billion, from $7.24 billion last year. Strong online spending contributed to revenue growth.

Analysts were expecting profit of 97 cents per share, on revenue of $7.87 billion.

Expenses, an area of concern for Wall Street, rose 1 percent, with rewards spending up 10 percent. The company cut marketing and promotion spending by 12 percent; consulting fees and technology expenses dropped 6 percent; and employee salaries and benefits dipped 2 percent, helping to offset higher rewards and member services spending.

For the full year 2011, American Express posted net income of $4.94 billion, or $4.09 per share, up from $4.06 billion, or $3.35 per share, for 2010. Revenue rose 9 percent to $29.96 billion, up 9 percent from $27.58 billion last year.

The company did not provide a specific forecast for the new year. Chief Financial Officer Daniel Henry said during a conference call to discuss results that earnings in 2012 “will be the dependent on where the economy goes.” He noted that Amex will face more difficult comparisons in coming quarters after posting very strong growth over the last two years.

Henry also noted that some benefits are not going to recur, like funds from a settlement with Visa Inc. and MasterCard Inc. that is now fully paid. Overall, the company maintained its long-term forecast for 8 percent revenue growth and 12 percent to 15 percent earnings per share growth each year.

Investors eyeing the revenue figures sent shares down aftermarket. The revenue shortfall in part reflected lower interest income than analysts expected. That was due in part to customers paying off their monthly balances as they try to avoid building up debt.

American Express was trading down $1.15, or 2.3 percent, at $49.80, from its close in the regular session at $50.95.
