• Of all of the top airlines in the world that are used by frequent flyers everyday, BMI Airlines has the least amount of notoriety of them all. This doesn?t, however, mean that they don?t offer great service or a wide list of destinations to travelers. In fact, if you take a look at the many cities they serve, and some of the perks and specials they offer, you may be tempted to try them next time you fly.

Airlines compete with each other by having special bundles, including accommodations, fares, and services, such as car rentals, at low rates. Since BMI updates their special offerings frequently on their website, it is a good idea to check it before taking a trip to see what specials there are. Sometimes the special bundled packages are not a good deal, because you do not need all of the services included in the package. BMI Airlines also has loyalty programs that allow frequent flyers to save even more, so this is worth looking into if you?re someone who travels a lot.

While not everyone has heard of BMI Airlines, most people are familiar with the name of the larger airline it?s now part of, Lufthansa. Lufthansa took over complete control of BMI in November of 2009. Lufthansa has become the 4th largest airline carrier in the world, based on the number of passengers it carries each year. As a matter of fact, when Star Alliance ? the most recognized airline alliance worldwide ? was founded, Lufthansa was one of the founding members. The passengers who fly on BMI also benefit from BMI?s alliance with Lufthansa in the form of special offerings and passenger rewards. The influence of Lufthansa from Germany on BMI is evidenced by the creation of a German language website for BMI in 2011.

BMI doesn?t shortchange its Economy class passengers even though its main focus is on the Business traveler. The features BMI provides its Economy class passengers are very user-friendly. The appeal of Economy flights is obviously to save money, but with BMI Airlines, you don?t have to sacrifice comfort either. If you like to sit in certain sections of an airplane when you fly, book early and BMI gives you the option of choosing your own seat out of those that are still empty. You?ll have different forms of entertainment to choose from, and, unlike other airlines, they offer refreshments from time to time, including complimentary soft drinks and even alcoholic beverages. For the regular meals, they offer you a good selection of menu choices. There are even special kits given to young children to help keep them occupied during the flight. Business travelers should really appreciate all of the different cities and destinations that BMI Airlines has to offer every day of the week. This airline also provides rewards programs that can help you save money and earn flights as you fly to and from your destinations for business. Whether you are traveling just a few hundred miles away, or to a different continent, BMI Airlines has something to offer you.

  • COMMENTARY | The Associated Press quoted President Barack Obama in saying the GOP approach will “fundamentally cripple America in meeting the challenges of the 21st century.” Being that this is an election year, a Democratic president would go public with such a statement. Being registered as an independent voter means I am not loyal to any particular party line. With that being said, no matter who gets elected in November, there are no winners. Here is a look at why the U.S. is in trouble no matter who gets elected.

    Analyzing Obama’s Quote

It is clear President Obama believes the country will be best served with a Democratic president. If you were to pose the question “Which political party would point the country in the right direction” to a Republican, they would decide to stick with their own political party. The point is, it is not a political party that is going to save the country, but an honest, hard working and country serving politician. Boy, is that a contradiction in terms.

Stop Voting Based Upon Political Party Line

I hear the bantering often among friends and strangers alike. “We need a Democrat in office,” “I’m Republican, and I refuse to vote for anyone who isn’t.” Here is an idea. Stop voting based solely upon political party affiliation and start voting for the people who are going to do the right thing. Everybody has the right to vote however they’d like, but if anyone wants the country to go further, it seems prudent to take in all the facts before registering your vote in November.

    Lack of Good Candidates

President Obama says the GOP will “fundamentally cripple America,” and he is partially right. The part that he left out is that a Democratic president will do the same if there are not capable of getting the rest of the politicians in Washington to cooperate and look beyond party lines and special interests. I imagine that the founding fathers are rolling in their graves at this point. Should the demise of our nation be summed up to a failure to communicate, then our enemies do not lay overseas, but are right here at home.

The point is, if things don’t turn around soon, the United States will be “fundamentally crippled” regardless of who is in office.

The 30-year fixed-rate mortgage dipped below 4%, possibly triggering a refinancing boom for many of the same borrowers who already have taken advantage of rock-bottom interest rates.

According to a survey by Credit Suisse on Thursday, lenders were offering an average rate of 3.91% on 30-year fixed-rate mortgages to borrowers who paid ?points,? or fees, worth 1% of the loan balance.

Wells Fargo & Co. advertised on its website Friday afternoon a 3.875% rate on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage, with fees of 1% on the loan.

But some borrowers haven?t been able to refinance rates because they can?t qualify under loan standards that are much tighter than at the time of their first loan. Other borrowers don?t have enough equity in their home to refinance.

Before the housing crisis, refinancing tended to jump when borrowers were able to lower their rate by 0.5 percentage point. Since 2009, mortgage applications have taken longer to process, while riskier borrowers have faced higher refinancing costs. As a result, borrowers typically now refinance when rates are 1.5 percentage points below their current rate, according to Bank of America mortgage analysts.

Donald Fraser, a 56-year old pathology assistant who shaved a full percentage point off the 4.875% mortgage he got last year, said he plans to stash most of the $2,700 a year in savings into retirement. ?I don?t think we?ll ever see these rates in my lifetime or yours,? he said.

It isn?t clear how much these lower rates will help the economy, in part because a weakening economy is fueling the decline.

?We felt lucky. At the same time, we?re lucky at the expense of a suffering market,? said Richard Klompus, who refinanced his Glastonbury, Conn., home with a 4%, 30-year fixed-rate mortgage.

Mr. Klompus, 49, had a hybrid adjustable-rate mortgage that carries a 4.5% rate for the first five years before moving to a variable rate. He paid tens of thousands of dollars to pay down his loan balance to $417,000, the maximum size for loans eligible for purchase by mortgage companies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

To encourage refinancing, Obama administration officials and U.S. regulators are in talks with lenders about ways to revamp an existing White House refinancing initiative designed to help borrowers with little or no equity. The program is open to borrowers whose loans are backed by Fannie and Freddie, which guarantee about half of all outstanding home loans.

The Federal Housing Finance Agency, which oversees Fannie and Freddie, is weighing a series of changes to the program, which has been snarled by a series of technical hurdles. Just 838,000 borrowers have refinanced, short of the hoped-for four million to five million. Just 63,000 of those borrowers have loans worth more than 105% of their home value.

?It hasn?t worked, to be honest,? said James Parrott, a top White House housing adviser, in a speech to industry executives this week. He said the housing market is at a ?critical juncture? and policy decisions over the next six months could determine whether the economic headwinds are ?going to be a blip or a broader struggle.?

A separate question is whether banks will be able to handle the volume of mortgage applications.

Banks recently have laid off mortgage employees in anticipation of lower loan volumes, while shifting others to the backlog of delinquent loans. The reduced ability to handle loan volumes means that banks have charged higher rates relative to their borrowing costs, muting the decline in rates.

  • It seems that just about every other Japanese film coming out these days is based on a cartoon or comic, so it seems a good time to have a look with goo Ranking at how people rate the best live-action movie adaptations of manga and anime.

    Demographics

Over the 22nd and 23rd of July 2011 1,114 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 65.4% of the sample were female, 12.3% in their teens, 16.5% in their twenties, 28.6% in their thirties, 24.8% in their forties, 10.1% in their fifties, and 7.7% aged sixty or older. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample.

I?ve not seen any of the movies, and I?m not really sure how the list was created ? Nodame Cantibile, for instance, seemed quite a popular real-life realisation of the comic, but it doesn?t feature in the list. On the other hand, I am not in the least suprised to see that My Darling is a Foriegner features nowhere on the list.

This coming weekend I have a preview ticket for Tsure ga Utsu ni Narimashite, which I would translate as When My Hubby Became Depressed, a film of the TV series of the manga comic. Let?s have the trailer for that:

  • This essay was commissioned by the National Post. It was published under the headline “A Problem for Everyone”. In the print edition, the overline — a large font summary of what you are about to read written by the editors — reads: “Income inequality isn’t just unfair — it threatens the whole foundation on which our capitalist economy is based.” Those are not my words. They are the words of the National Post.

Work hard and you’ll get ahead. That’s been the mantra of folks who prefer their governments small and their success big.

But as two recent Conference Board of Canada reports show, that mantra is being cast into doubt. According to the voice of Canada’s business establishment: “High inequality can diminish economic growth if it means that the country is not fully using the skills and capabilities of all its citizens or if it undermines social cohesion, leading to increased social tensions. High inequality [also] raises a moral question about fairness and social justice.”

Say the word “inequality,” and many people automatically assume you’re talking about the poor. But a mounting body of research shows that, left unchecked, a growing income gap affects the rich, the poor and everyone in between.

Economic growth used to be touted as the surest ticket to broad-based prosperity. But during the strongest period of economic growth in the past 30 years, between 1997 and 2007, a third of all income gains went to the richest 1 per cent of Canadian tax filers.

Think that’s normal? In the 1960s, the most recent comparable period of sustained growth, the richest 1 per cent took only 8 per cent of the gains from growth.

Not since 1920, when Ottawa began to collect income data, have Canada’s elites pocketed a larger share of the income gains from economic growth. Top marginal tax rates for millionaires also are at rates last seen in 1920.

Talk about these trends and even the business sector starts to twitch. After initially trying to defend current executive pay practices, former CEO of Denison Mines, Peter Farmer, told the media last spring: “I don’t think I’m in a minority saying that a lot of us are disgusted with the amount of compensation that is being paid, particularly in the U.S.” Frank Dottori, who ran a multinational forest products company with $2-billion in sales, said trends in pay for CEOs and the rest of us are “setting the tone for social unrest if we don’t start bringing it under control.. Big business better be careful.”

Canada’s top 100 CEOs have seen a 13 per cent year-over-year jump in average pay, rising to an average of $6-million. In contrast, the average earnings of employed Canadians has fallen to $38,500.

Things are better for full-time, year-round workers, but not by much. Median earnings inched from $44,100 to $45,600 in inflation-adjusted terms — not over the last year, but since 1976.

Pause on that for a moment: Just $1,500 more after 33 years. And consider that today’s workers have invested much more time and money in their education than their counterparts from a generation ago.

This storyline isn’t in keeping with our traditions and international reputation as a land of opportunity for those with a little pluck and effort.

The Conference Board’s international review of the data shows that since the mid-1990s, Canada went from better-than-average to worse-than-average levels of inequality, slumping from 14th to 22nd place out of 32 OECD countries. Our decline was more rapid than even the United States, despite a decade of robust economic growth and record levels of job creation. At the very same time, 15 OECD nations — including many of our peers, like Norway, Italy and the U.K. — were reducing income inequality.

No matter your political leanings, most people understand that endless concentration of income, wealth and power is bad for the economy. After all, businesses rely on rising purchasing power of the many, not the few, to deliver growth and profits.

The top 10 per cent of Canadian households have seen steady gains in income, but it wasn’t until 2007 that most incomes finally nudged ahead of where they stood in 1976, in constant dollar terms. Then the recession hit.

Yes, many goods are cheaper than they were a generation ago. But the list does not include higher education and home ownership, both of which lead to greater economic security. Those costs have zoomed past most people’s income growth. Increasingly, Canadians have been pursuing these two dreams with ever-growing piles of debt. You don’t need to work at the Bank of Canada to know that current levels of household debt offer a precarious foundation for sustained growth.

For most Canadians, the issue isn’t that the rich are getting richer. The dilemma they face on a daily basis is getting and staying in the middle class. Canadians rightly believe that hard work should lead to upward mobility. They believe most people won’t need help if the market is fair and they play by the rules — get educated, work hard.

It’s the promise of their own upward mobility that has many Canadians willing to brush aside the handsome gains enjoyed by the rich in the past 20 years. But rising inequality, in good times and bad, makes it increasingly feel like the game is rigged, destabilizing foundational values and expectations, including those of conservatives.

Take families. The citizens of the world’s 10th largest economy should reasonably expect to be able to support and raise their children.

Yet today, Canadians are wondering if their children are going to do as well as they did.

I see it in my own life. Back in 1979, it took six weeks working the minimum wage full-time to cover my full-time undergraduate tuition in Toronto. Working all summer, I covered my books, administration fees, rent and food and even had some beer money left over.

Today’s typical student in Ontario has to work 16 weeks at the minimum wage to cover just the cost of tuition, let alone anything else. Yet most are still frozen out of the job market, with 180,000 fewer 15-24-year-olds employed across Canada than when the debt crisis broke in 2008.

Then there’s the rising cost of housing. In 1980, the price of the average residential listing in Toronto was the equivalent of 3.5 years of the average household income. Thirty years later, the average house is worth seven years of average household income.

True, interest rates have plummeted in the last 20 years, making mortgages more affordable. But the last time mortgage rates were this low was in the 1950s, when the average household income could finance home ownership, put kids through university and save for retirement on one breadwinner’s paycheque, not two.

The story is the same in most large cities across this land, the places where most young Canadians live: The latest generation of Canadian families has to put in way more time in the labour market than their predecessors to avoid losing economic ground.

As the Conference Board study noted, since 1993, the richest 20 per cent has increased its share of total income, while both the poorest and the middle groups have taken home a smaller piece of the economic pie. A system that lets a small group gain more while the majority is forced to settle for less, despite ever-greater effort, is a prescription for trouble. No one knows the tipping point, but lock enough people out of the promise of gains and at some point, instead of stability and growth, you get social unrest.

So what can we do to turn this story around?

Some will call for change that doesn’t much disturb the status quo: Improvements in productivity, or tax cuts for Canadians with the lowest taxable incomes. But truly reducing inequality requires either increased incomes or lower costs for the majority. That means bosses and owners sharing more of the productivity gains and profits with workers; or paying more tax to expand affordable access to post-secondary education, public transit and child care, thus taking the pinch out of small paycheques.

For those who feel these measures are too costly, they should consider the alternative.

History has shown us, time and again: When too much is controlled by too few, something has to give. Continuously rising inequality is unsustainable.

Everyone has a stake in fixing this. And the fix has no political colour. It is about the future of Canada and where we’re heading as an economy, a society, a democracy. That’s why even conservatives are worrying about Canada’s rising income gap.

  • Millennial Media recently released a study conducted with comScore analyzing the U.S. mobile automotive advertising industry. The study explores the demographics and behavior of consumers accessing mobile auto content and mobile advertising campaigns within the automotive vertical.

In the United Kingdom, mobile auto consumers follow a demographic profile similar to the U.S. audience, as almost 60 percent of mobile auto consumers in the UK are between the ages of 18 and 34. In addition, mobile auto consumers over-index for higher household income levels (in both the ?65,000 ? <?75,000 and ?75,000+ income segments) compared to the total mobile audience.

Mobile consumers in the UK accessed mobile auto content at a similarly high rate as the U.S. audience, with 32 percent of users accessing mobile auto content once a week and a sizeable 17 percent accessing this content once a day. While more than half of the UK mobile auto audience accesses content through a mobile browser, 30 percent report making use of apps ? a rate higher than in the U.S.
